For most people, receiving gifts and good wishes is a major ingredient in marking a birthday. I’m part of the most. The last time my birthday came around, a friend of mine got me a gift – a cute picture frame with a butterfly built into the top left corner and Darlene Zschech’s album – Revealing Jesus. She had them nicely packed in a red and white gift pack which had “100% GORGEOUS” written on it. Talk about a lovely gift.
Well, while decongesting my room a few days back – five months after my birthday to be precise – I came across the pack and discovered there was something else in it: a purple envelope with a beautiful card in it that read ‘especially for you on your birthday with lots of love. Relax and… enjoy yourself’. It also had a personal note from her. I smiled and then shook my head…. How much of a hurry could I have been in that I failed to discover this last piece in the pack? What if it was a gift certificate from some exotic spa with a validity period of 30 days? Wow! That would not have been funny. The lost opportunity would have taken the smile off my face.
One can only imagine the things we’ve missed out on because we were in too much of a hurry, were too busy to spend a little more time, were carried away with other ‘more important’ things, or were too excited about the first parts that we didn’t care to check if there was more.
There are gifts for us everywhere… if only we will pay some more attention and as the saying goes, ‘stop and smell the roses’…. A little more time reading and meditating on God’s word, more hours studying that difficult subject, more quality time with family and friends, more time taking stock, planning the next day or week, resting, planning our diet…. So many wonderful things and experiences await us.
I really have to pay more attention. I guess we all need to because… THERE’S MORE!
