Have you heard about the ‘area of brilliance’? Well, this stood out to me as I advanced through the pages of The Power of Focus. Simply put, this is that area where you excel with minimal effort, study or preparation. It’s an area of ease for you notwithstanding the difficulty others experience. Now here’s the mind blower - These activities actually give you energy! Yes. Energy. Can you imagine that? An activity that energizes you instead of draining you? A task that you would do and go home happy even if you weren’t paid for your service? An endeavour you would gladly give up your favourite TV program or some hours of sleep...

Making the Most

Moving to Eket was quite an event in my family’s life. If this had happened three years ago, I think I would have been devastated but certain happenings brought me to a place where I felt like I could pull up my anchors, sail to a new location, set them down again and totally have a blast. The other day, someone asked what I would say to people in Lagos who were considering a move to Eket.  At that, I went on about the variety of fish we have here, cheaper accommodation, lower school fees, cleaner and fresher air, reduced cost for sports facilities, fresher fruits and vegetables, and so on. Seriously, you...

Habits 2

My kids love to go swimming. It took a while but we eventually worked this activity into our weekly family routine and now the process is seamless. It’s been said that the average time required to change a habit is about twenty one days. It’s interesting to see how easy it is to determine the positive habits you need to develop. The hard part usually is finding out what your negative habits are and this is because we are often in denial or we just don’t realize that something we do so easily and frequently is breaking us instead of making us. So it’s necessary to ask your friends, colleagues, bosses, mentors, and...

Habits 1

Once upon a time, I used to read all sorts of books. Then life happened and I had to narrow the scope of my reading accordingly. Well I found this one book and someone said ‘if you only read one book this millennium… the Power of Focus should be it!’ So I’m making room to read it and to share. It’s by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt. Did you know that life doesn’t just happen? It’s about choices and how we respond to situations. So if you’re happy with where you are today, you can give the credit to the good choices you made in the past and your positive...

Coincidence

Every now and then we find ourselves in a situation where we need help. Sometimes in desperation we cry out to God and go on to face the day, hoping that things will work out fine. Then one thing leads to another, something changes, someone shows up or leaves, we happen to be somewhere at just the time the right information is being passed, or some other interesting twist and our problem gets solved. Then we start to tell the story to our friends, and someone says ‘what an amazing coincidence’. Seriously? Coincidence? Well, I heard someone say sometime back, ‘How come these coincidences happen every time I pray?’ Selah...

Harmattan

Once school's in session, my responsibilities extend to doing homework with the kids. This isn't something I look forward to but there are some benefits. Believe it or not, I get to learn new things as I get involved and it is an opportunity to see the world from their point of view. This weekend, Nathan had to write an essay about Harmattan. Part of the requirement was to outline some its benefits. I realized then that all the thoughts that readily came to mind about this season were negative - dryness, cracked lips, leaves falling from trees, grass turning brown, poor visibility, delayed or cancelled flights, irritation of the eyes, respiratory complications,...

2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog. Here's an excerpt: A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,300 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people. Click here to see the complete report. ...

Look around you

While doing some “handy manny” type jobs at home some days back, my hubby tried to figure out the cause of the frequent trips we had been experiencing on our generator. He came to the conclusion that the engine oil tank was in need of a refill but the orientation of the tank was such that it required a special funnel or nozzle.  He gave it some thought and soon followed an impression to look around him. Searching the generator shed, he found some materials stowed away - clearly forgotten. Going through, he came across a rather small funnel, picked it up and cleaned it, then tried to in the slot. It fit...
