My daughter is crazy about long hair. She has this really interesting hair texture that doesn’t quite do well with weaves. I usually say the strands cry out from the locks ‘let me out, let me out, I want to be free’. Long story short, her hair gets untidy very quickly. Our strategy for a while was to use wool to reinforce the locks and that made it last longer, but with that came the opportunity to make the hair longer, so she would negotiate each time her hair was to be styled, and she would say, ‘Mummy, how long’s my hair gonna be?’ And then she would go ‘ohhh Mummy, but...

Snap out of it

Happiness is a choice. I’ve known that for a long time now but I was reminded of that this past week when things didn’t go the way I planned. I invested valuable time in an activity that turned out to be an exercise in futility. It hurt so much and I mourned the loss of my time. I could have achieved so much more. That was a low moment for me, so low I made the mistake of saying out loud ‘I am so sad right now’. Terrible! That should never come out of anybody’s mouth, and guess what? A few moments later, I became really sad, so sad everyone noticed, and for...

Time

I fell ill. Wow! This usually doesn't happen to me, but it did. The height of it was the moment I fell to the ground while trying to get from the hospital bed to the restroom which was only about 10 feet away. Someone helped me back to the bed and a nurse assisted me to the restroom. The amazing thing about this experience is how normal I felt in my mind, I could say I was mentally sound, but physically incapacitated. I knew everything that had to be done, and that I would have loved to do, but I also knew my body was unable to handle any of those at that...

Residence Permit

I remember my days on Campus. It was like being in a free world to some extent. There weren’t any serious rules to abide by so you could almost say we were free to do whatever we wanted. People buried themselves in diverse passions they only then had the liberty to – parties, business, music, fellowship, etc. Sometimes we would carry on as if those things were more important than our studies, but as we neared the end of each semester, the awareness of our primary purpose in school would become more evident and in fellowship you would hear the secretary announce: ‘Welcome to the Fellowship of Christian Students… Remember, you must first...

The Choice

Sometimes, even when we know for sure that possibilities exist, we feel too tired to reach out and grab what is right there in front of us. Sometimes we’re so close to the big break we desire and all that’s left is one move, but all of a sudden, our feet feel like they are weighted at the base. Sometimes, we know we’re not where we’re meant to be and that our current state is not the best, but we look around and because it seems we’re better off that some others, we consider settling right where we are. Do I really have to? What have I got to lose if I don’t?...

Life Cycle

Are you one of those who hardly ever have a problem? Consider yourself fortunate, lucky, blessed. Sometimes we coast for seasons without stress but every now and then, just as examinations are required to test our knowledge and competence, and to determine our qualification for transition to higher levels in our endeavours, life throws us a few tests and trials. Yes, that’s how I view them when they come around. I refuse to look at them as events that will break me, I always look out for the good in every single trial I go through. I believe there’s a silver lining behind every dark cloud and if I can’t find it, I...

In Love

Yes, it's almost here - Valentine's day! And with the elections postponed in Nigeria, the celebration of love can go on. Yesterday, I stumbled upon an old book of mine and my husband and I had a good laugh as we went over some of the poems I wrote back then. Here are a few:   One of your jokes would brighten my evening One of your smiles would bring sunlight in what seems like a dark night One look in your eyes would be like discovering the twinkle of the stars Even the darkest night is beautiful when I'm with you     Your love is like a fountain, refreshing Your company is like a balm, soothing Your words are like...

February Already

I remember saying Happy New Year just a while ago in a large gathering at Eko Hotel where we had the cross over service. It seems like just yesterday but a whole month has already gone by since then and now I can say this year is in full swing. No more happy new year greetings. The year's officially old. But we can still experience newness and new beginnings in different aspects of our lives. It's never too early or too late to begin. Everything starts from somewhere and at some time. Start and press on to fulfil your purpose, and remember it is a gradual process. It doesn't happen overnight. We must be ready to begin...
