Life lessons

Reach Out

Micah had been all over the house earlier in the day. It was obvious he was sleepy but he just refused to admit it or give in to our efforts to make him sleep. Finally, he asked for a sheet of paper and a pen and went to the dining table to scribble. A few minutes later, he was asleep, pen in hand. Funny boy! We took him to the room and tucked him in. I checked on him a while later but he wasn’t yet ready to wake up. While I sat in my room much later, he walked in and sweetly asked ‘Mummy, can we go bike riding?’ And I opened...

Paying Attention?

My daughter is at that phase where she doesn’t pay attention long enough. She easily gets distracted with information in a nearby print out, a Barbie doll, a thought that comes to her mind, or something else. This new trait shows up particularly during homework and it can be very upsetting because in our ever so busy world, we have to make time for the things that are important to us and that often means putting aside some other thing. Having made the sacrifice, I always want to come away with a sense of achievement, knowing I have imparted some knowledge, gotten to know her a little better, or just enjoyed quality time...

Today

I showed up at the gym after a little over a month of no workout. The treadmill was my equipment of choice so I stayed on it for about 30 minutes although the  gym instructor had warned against doing too much on my first day back. Now, only a few hours later, my whole body is in pain and I am totally weak. Why did I do this to myself? Oh! If only I could turn back the hands of time. Sometimes because of how much pleasure we derive at the moment, we go on doing things that may have unpleasant consequences in the future. Some results are short term and may present you...

First Impressions

The carpenter arrived with the pieces that were to be put together to make the beds. Nathan perceived the recently coated wood from an adjoining room and blurted out, ‘what’s that awful smell?’ I immediately thought ‘o oh… where are they going to sleep this night?’ He followed the scent to his room where he found the beautiful bed. Next thing he said was ‘Wow! This is so beautiful. I love it, I love it. I like our new bed and it smells…’ he bent to sniff it, ‘...

My First Aid Box

I had a cute first aid box sometime back. It was white with a red cross and it had a little bit of all you should have in a first aid box. Well, time passed and it emptied out. So I decided to refill it because I wanted to be prepared in the event that someone got hurt. I walked into a pharmacy close to my house and bought all the supplies. By the time I was done, I realized my cute box wouldn’t hold everything, so I bought a much larger box. This one’s green with a white cross on it. Aesthetics aside, my new first aid supply has come in handy –...

Extra Milers

This weekend something interesting happened. We were at a hotel in Eket and for the fun of it, my husband was assessing them. From how quickly we were checked in, to how polite the staff were, to the speed with which they prepared the food we ordered, to the presentation and taste of the food they served…. He just went on. Oh! Did I mention the part where he took off 0.5 stars each time they didn’t measure up? He would go… ‘that’s minus 0.5 stars for them’. Then at the time the first match of the Barclay’s English Premier League was to air, the staff responsible for changing channels went out and...

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Once upon a time, we prayed about everything and trusted God for direction. Then someone said God gave us brains for a purpose, we should stop bothering Him with the little details of our lives. So we began to pray only about the serious issues – finding a life partner, bearing children, getting employed, starting a business. We relied on our intellects, our training, our experience, advice from loved ones and mentors, and on google for those other decisions. Now we’re just like everyone else – nothing excellent, unique, profound, impactful, convincing or transformational about us. Is this really how we were meant to be? Wonder about how He takes time to number the hair on our...

Time Test

It's been quite a day – from the worship service to a baby dedication reception, then to a thanksgiving party, then a graduation party and finally a birthday party. This day’s been truly packed. At first I was concerned about timing and wanted to move quickly through all the events, but I later decided to relax a little and enjoy the moment. While enjoying the moment, we drove past some beautiful houses and one of them looked out of place. The paint on it didn't only look old, it was peeling off the wall. I had passed by that house some months back and it looked really nice, so I wondered about the...

Empty Nests

Every now and then, I hear couples talk about having all their birds away from the nest. All of a sudden, the kids go off to boarding school or become independent and move away from home to start life on their own. The nest empties out and mum and dad are left alone. I had a foretaste of this when my kids went to their aunt’s for the weekend. Imagine having a great portion of those children related details removed from your conversation, and having no one else demanding your time and attention. Homework and school projects will no longer be in your way and there’ll be no squeals, screams or fights to...

Work in Progress

I stepped carefully into a structure that appeared to be a house. The floor was covered with so much rubble, it was hard to find a good spot to place my foot as I walked. The steps on the staircase were not yet clearly defined and there were no railings in place. The rooms looked so small and all the surfaces were rough – walls and ceilings. The only consolation was that men were at work in different parts of the house. This building was clearly work in progress. Does your life ever feel like a construction site? Well, I went back to that building a few months later and this time, it looked...
