Favourites 2 – The Coat of Many Colours

Now let’s go on to the second record. You see, it’s so important to have a basis for your beliefs, values, decisions and positions. Without that, you’ll find yourself swaying this way and that. People should be able to say this is who this person is. Standing by that reason is what keeps you true and authentic as you relate with all kinds of people and are faced with different circumstances from day to day. Jacob had his reason. He loved Joseph the most because he was born to him in his old age, and to make the distinction between Joseph and the rest of his sons, he gave him a coat of...

FAVOURITES 1 – ‘MY SON’

When it comes to children, I don’t have favourites. In fact, I’m not really into favourites. I don’t have a favourite colour, perfume, place in the world, or favourite food. At least, I can boast of having a favourite person in the world and that is my husband. I have a few reasons why I don’t support the favourite child idea. These reasons are based on two historical records about two families. The first is the family of Isaac and Rebekah and the second is the family of Jacob, the younger son of Isaac and Rebekah. He was Rebekah’s favourite while Esau, the firstborn, was Isaac’s favourite. It’s interesting to see that this...

The Accident

There was an accident. Two kids died; both from the same family. I was told the driver of the school bus was going too fast. He was on his way to pick children from a nearby village and drive them to school when he lost control and ran into the bike that had the kids on it. People said he was late and that he may have been drunk. My heart ached. They weren’t mine but I mourned. I wished I could turn back the hands of time and make them leave home five minutes earlier or later… anything that would keep their precious lives from coming to an abrupt end that Monday...

1 over 7

It's so important to ensure that you rest. Sometimes things just come up and you find yourself going from one task to the other, one meeting to the next, driven by whatever drives you. Then before you know it, you realize the weekend - or whatever time you were meant to use for rest and relaxation - is over and you have not rested. It's so easy to turn what should have been a restful day to a stressful day. Waking up with that list in your head is enough stress already and sometimes it feels like there are just too many things to do, simply because we have it all in our...

Priority Check

It’s so easy to get carried away with the activity and forget the reason for it. A man says to his wife, ‘how can you say I don’t care about you and the kids any more? I spend so much time working hard so I can provide for you. I have given you everything you need – this house, the cars, the vacations…. What more do you want from me?’ It’s also easy to become overly sucked into religious activities. You can very easily slip into that state where you find that you are spending so much time and energy on the work of God but are neglecting your personal relationship with the God...

Post Vacation

I had the most interesting Easter Holiday cum vacation. The kids' school closed on Thursday, the day before Good Friday. Can you imagine that? Well, by God's grace and favor, we were able to make it to Lagos on the the same day.  Now I'm back to reality. I'll say: Build as much fun and fantasy into your reality. All work and no play makes you BORING. Work hard and endeavor to make room for rest and relaxation. Value your family - nuclear and extended. Keep those relationships healthy and strong. You'll find that your parents/siblings can be your best friends, part of your support system and they can also provide you a home away...

Count the Cost

The cost estimate was provided and a decision had to be made… to start or to wait. In the room with me were my close companions - Passion and Common Sense. Passion said ‘Yes, go for it! Even if you don’t have all the money that’s required, just start and believe that God will provide, that the funds will come somehow, even from unexpected sources. After all, Jesus said, ‘Ask and it shall be given unto you…’ Where’s your faith? Come on, jump in’. Common Sense had a different opinion. He said “Wait, count the cost. Remember Jesus also said ‘…don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a...

Pitfalls

I read about someone who did something he shouldn't have done and many people began to attack him on social media. I was concerned about the whole thing and was in deep thought about it for a while. I wanted to understand what went wrong and how it got to that point. I wished I had all the information so I could do a thorough analysis on the matter and identify the root cause, but with the scanty information, I was left with many possible scenarios to analyse. Well, I have outlined some recommendations based on insights from my analysis that could help us avoid such complications in our own lives. Firstly, hold true...
