Rome

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but these days it seems we all want to do just that or better – how about building it in a minute? Like Mister Maker.

Ambition is good but every now and then, I see the need to calm down, assess the situation and push some things out into the future.

Guess what!!! There’s something called TOMORROW 💃💃🕺🏼🕺🏼and you probably will still be here then. So why kill yourself prematurely by trying to get too many things done TODAY? Notice I said ‘too many’. MANY is fine but TOO MANY isn’t. And our bodies and other indicators signal us when we’re getting to TOO MANY.

A good indicator for me is REST. Once I stack up the activities and I can’t seem to find room for sufficient rest to enable me retain my residence permit or the integrity of my earth suit, i.e., my body, I reassess and push some things to the future – tomorrow, next week, next month, next year – these are some of the available options.

So whenever you begin to feel like you are overwhelmed and you’re losing control, check well. You’ll find a thing or two that can wait till tomorrow. It’s not procrastination; it’s prioritisation for survival. There has to be order and balance in your life. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.

I wish you a long and full life – rich with beneficial and fulfilling accomplishments and lived out in perfect health and vitality.

Now if you haven’t watched the studio viral video of my single, titled ‘My Whole Life’, here’s the direct link.

My Whole Life by Anietie Bature

Your Best

I just watched a video of a young and extremely talented doctor/singer who passed away after an accident.

I’m thinking – he was all that yet his life came to an end after it took a turn for even greater heights.

What happens to dreams, desires, and ambitions when a life comes to an end? Death often means the end – case closed, nothing more to be done; but in some cases dreams outlive the dreamers in diverse ways such that their lives keep speaking and having an impact even when they are no more – people’s memories of the person, people buying into their vision and running with it, the lives they touched, books they wrote, and so on.

While there is life, there is hope. While I’m here, I’ll give each day my best and be sure to leave a legacy. ‘There goes another dream’, you may say; but we must not stop dreaming, thinking and imagining. Albert Einstein said ‘Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions’. So I’ll keep dreaming.

How about you? How are you living today? Are you truly living or just wasting time? Are you making a difference in anybody’s life? Are you making each day count?

Here’s a toast to your success and to fulfillment in life. May all your good dreams come true, and if you feel overwhelmed already, there’s help. Call on God. Access Code: JESUS. He asked us to cast  our cares on Him because He cares for us. If you haven’t done so already, this is a good time. And if you’ve pursued and accomplished so many things and yet you find yourself searching for meaning, it’s a good time to call. Make that call.

Long Distance – Part 3

A lot was happening all at once. 2007 turned out to be quite a year. Could it be because I wrote out all those interesting items on my list of things to accomplish in 2007? Could it be that in addition to dreaming and planning, I was praying for those wonderful things to happen? Could it be that heaven actually paid attention and dispatched resources to grease the wheels of fortune and make those dreams come true?

Well there’s more. Sometime before our moves to Lagos, Kingsley came to Abuja to visit his parents. Then he made our engagement official by informing them that ‘Annie’, the young lady they knew very well, was the one he wanted to marry. It wasn’t a shock to any of them. We were both part of a group of friends from school who were connected mainly by music. Some were instrumentalists, and some were singers. We were all in the choir and we all lived in Abuja. So we would troop to each person’s house on their birthdays if it fell during the holidays, make a lot of noise, eat whatever was available and just make sure the celebrant felt valuable, loved and appreciated. Our parents knew our friends, so Kingsley’s parents knew me.

Funny enough, whenever we had debates in the group, Kingsley always supported the opposition… and on one occasion, Daniel said ‘Hmn… Annie & Kingsley… I wonder where you people’s ‘continued rivalry’ will lead’. He had a good laugh when he eventually heard we were planning to get married. I, for one, was impressed with Kingsley’s engaging and sometimes superior argument. It made for good conversation.

His dad sat down and questioned him in my presence. Is this what you want? Are you sure you are ready for this? To all these he replied in the affirmative. You see, his dad used to say concerning men, ‘If you don’t want any trouble in life, don’t get married. If you feel you are man enough to handle some trouble, marry just one wife; but if you want more trouble than you can handle, marry more than one wife’. His opinion was that one woman has all the joy, wisdom, love, encouragement, and trouble a man needs to become all that he should be.

I provided the contact details for necessary engagements with my family and we let the elders handle the rest of the discussion. The introduction took place before we moved to Lagos and November 24 was set for the traditional marriage. This was going to be barely a month from our resumption dates. My ever so warm and loving cousins welcomed me into home for that period while Kingsley lived in his family’s Lagos abode.

As was expected, we didn’t get any time off work to plan for or finalize the traditional marriage arrangements. We relied on our family members to help us with that. Our bosses were kind enough to let us work half the day on Friday, November 23. At 12noon, we both set out from our offices, met at the airport, boarded the plane to Calabar, and then got on a bus which left for Uyo at about 4pm. Unfortunately, a trailer had fallen along the way and caused a serious road block. The traffic was so bad, we got to Uyo at midnight, six hours later than we should have.

My brothers picked us up, dropped me at my Uncle’s house and took Kingsley with them to another cousin’s home where they spent the night. The next day, all required members from both families and guests convened at my father’s village home for the traditional marriage. Everything went well, and as our custom is, my people sent me off that same night. I joined my husband, his family, and their team of friends and well wishers on a road trip to their base. Early Sunday morning, we left for Lagos by bus, and on Monday we were back at our desks as if nothing had happened over the weekend. What a rush!

Now we had one major event left before year end – The Church Wedding. The date was set – December 22, 2007.

To be continued…

Who I am and Why I'm here

Who am I? I’m a singer, songwriter, chemical & environmental engineer, wife to one husband, and mother to three wonderful children whom I learn from day after day.

As I go through life, I try to learn from my experiences and those of others. I believe we can create a better tomorrow by applying these lessons so I share them on my blog so others can benefit. You can call this my little contribution to make the world a better place, one lesson at a time.

A dose of motivation is needful every now and then. Sometimes the pressures of life hit hard and bring us down to the point where we even begin to consider giving up. When I feel the need, I do not hesitate to push out some positivity pills to boost the morale of a weary man on a good mission and get him back on his feet. So, yes. You’ll find some motivational pieces here.

Goal setting, planning, work-life balance, family life, purpose, destiny, and success are some of the things that interest me. I love to work hard towards set goals and to celebrate when the job is done. Achievements keep me motivated.

If blogging can serve as a platform for networking, I hope it brings me in contact with people of integrity who believe that they have all it takes and then take deliberate steps everyday to be all and to accomplish all they were created to.

If you’re thinking of the sky as your starting point, rather than your limit – you’re my kind of person. Let’s make a mark; let’s make our world a better place; let’s leave a legacy.

Finishing Strong

Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard about ‘finishing strong’ from two influential figures in my life. I think it’s a tactful approach to start now to refocus efforts towards finishing strong. That way we can invest the coming weeks to months in clear cut steps that will bring about maximum achievement; the kind that will be reason enough to gather our loved ones together to celebrate, or to just sit in quietness and be grateful.
Are you considering jumping on this FS wagon? Then here’s a thought to help you on your way:
Decide on the one or two things that would make a remarkably fulfilling difference in your life if you accomplished them at this time, zero in on your target and go for it!
Sometimes we allow ourselves become ineffective because we chase so many things at the same time. Then we lose the benefits that come with focus and end up with some progress in many areas. How about aiming for the finish line in the most important areas. At least by the time you stop to take stock, you’ll have something to show for all your effort. Then you can move on to the issues at the back burners with enough zest from your recent achievements and get them sorted too.
I want to finish strong and this is my strategy. What’s yours?

Self Discipline

Here’s my definition of self discipline – You do what you know you should do because it is the right thing to do if you are to achieve your goal.
I think self discipline would be difficult to develop if there was nothing to look forward to. There has to be a cause, a reason, a driver, a motivation.
I have found that when the strength of one’s purpose begins to diminish or you begin to lose sight of it, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay committed to the cause and you find that the tendency for lapses increases.
I believe that we need discipline now and everyday. If you disagree, cast your mind back a few days, months or years. Were your greatest achievements not ushered in by seasons of heightened discipline in one area of endeavour or the other?
So if you are experiencing dissatisfaction in any area of your life right now, I think it’s time to employ this powerful weapon – self discipline. Take the time to define your goal, and outline the right things you need to do to achieve it. Then with your desired end in mind, get to work and keep at it; steady and consistent…. You’ll be pleased with the result.

Mid Year Check

I wonder why I needed a reminder this time. It didn’t quite register that we’re almost at the end of the first half of the year and it’s time for a Mid Year Check. Well, I’m extending the reminder to you. Your Mid Year Check is due!
Here are some things to check out:

  • The wonderful things that have happened thus far – consider them and be grateful
  • The mishaps you’ve experienced – be grateful again because you made it this far in spite of them. You could throw in some thoughts on what you could do differently next time to prevent such occurrences, that is, if these are issues you can control
  • Your goals – see how far you’ve come, celebrate your successes & restrategize to finish well in other areas
  • Your routine – have you used your time well? Are there adjustments you can make in your schedule to bring about improved efficiency
  • Family – do not forget this. Are you giving them the right priority and attention?
  • Your Health – have you done your annual check yet? Don’t push this off. Better safe than sorry.

I’m off to do my MYC. Hope you do the same sometime this week. I wish you a fruitful session.
